Mumblecore is a film movement that spanned from 2002-2010. These films focused primarily on bringing sincerity to film making, having scripts rely on the actors’ ability to improv and replicate natural gestures and body language. With this innovative approach, films could tackle more personal and realistic topics that young adults often experienced. While some films covered darker topics like grief and divorce, the intention was to emphasize the importance of building relationships with your loved ones, whether platonic or romantic. I decided to highlight the romance aspect and bonds of these films, rather than the darker themes since each film tackled its own issue and was not consistent. For the duotone, I chose pink and purple since they are often associated with love and loyalty. The doodles and ripped uneven edges imitate that organic feel these films were aiming for. Each doodle represents types of dates and adventures couples and friends can enjoy together and outlines individual perspectives of each actor, making them their own complicated soul. For the main title, I scanned my handwriting, almost incorporating my own kind of improv to this design, just like the actors in these films. Since most of the design is busier, I wanted the body copy to be on the simpler side to add some contrast and enhance readability in the sea of chaos, since this poster still must act as an informative pamphlet.
